Bees Knees

I never understood why someone would say something like, "She's the bees knees" and that was a compliment.

For several years now bees have been scarce across the country.

Honey bees that is.  Not those horrid paper wasp things that are becoming more prolific than bunnies.  Hate those things.

Last year I was walking some of the little Native's home from school and heard a sound!  A sound that made me stop and look around.

I realized the sound was coming from above me.  Looking up I was amazed at what I saw.  A tree exploding in blossoms and a sound so loud.  A humming.  A buzzing.  The blossoms were covered in honey bees flitting from blossom to blossom.

I sat and watched mesmerized.  I'd never seen a honey bee at work and so up close and personal.

Several times I went back and watched the bees at work.  So fascinating watching the pollen catch on their legs.  Big yellowness growing bigger on their little legs like a dancers leg warmers!

I took The Native's to see and The SM.  We all watched enjoying seeing these little insects hard at work.
Utah is called The Beehive State.  Industry.  Hard work.

This spring as I sat under my cherry tree I heard a noise.  A noise that is becoming music to my ears.  Music that has been sadly missed for too many years.

The music of the honey bee.  I'm glad our state is called, The Beehive State.  I like what it represents.

I'm still trying to decide if I'd consider it a compliment if I were called or compared to a bees knees.

I think chubby legs look adorable on a bee, much like chubbiness looks adorable on a baby.

But on me, I dunno..... packing extra on my thighs/knees/kankles.......  it just doesn't look as appealing on me as it does on a bee.

But if being called a bees knees was reference to how hard one works...... then I would take that as a right goodly compliment.

And speaking of bees............ guess who ordered himself a beehive and will be setting it up this weekend in our backyard.......  Looking forward to some fresh honey from my honey, The Keeper of the Bees.   I may just have to change his name from The SM (The Scout Master) to The KB.............!

For all who have read, "The Keeper of the Bees" by Gene Stratton Porter......... (if you haven't yet, you should!) you'll appreciate my last play on the characters Scout and the Keeper of the Bees.........

  1. My little husband is a keeper of bees and president of the beekeepers association....but, I don't know what that means to you since I haven't read the book...
He built himself top bar hives...check them out. Last year a bear came and attacked the hive. Luckily he didn't get the queen and another beekeeper came and took the whole herd (Yes, my husband was telling people that he had 10,000 head of livestock!) to his hives. We are going to try again this year. Another herd is coming this weekend. And now we have two top bar hives...with windows in the back so I can see them....
Love your pictures. I can almost hear the buzz myself.

    1. I didn't know that about your little husband! That is really cool and now we know where to come for help because you know we'll have all sorts of a million-fold questions!!

Nor did I know that you could get a hive with windows so you could see!! THAT! Is cool!!

    2. P.S. I think the only 'bear' trouble we'll have in these parts is a certain bear that starts with the letter "L" and ends in "evi". :D

    1. Oh this is fun! You, Donna, and I will be on a bee adventure this year...... well....... our husbands at any rate. We'll just post blog posts about their 'buzzing' and try to keep any 'stinging' comments out of them because we love our 'honey's'. :D

Wow......... I think I need to go back to bed after that comment.....

Donna can come up with a poem for us.

  4. What I said was:
    1. Q has hives and we get honey from him.
2.G wanted them. Wanted to put them in the pasture. I am too scared of being on the back of a suddenly stung horse.
3.Are you saying that you thought the SM was really a girl, but he turned out to be - but no. Probably not.
    4. Please do not get Germans. They wouldn't like me, and that would be bad.
    5. I'll just steal my honey from you and Q

    1. I'd forgotten that Q has bees. I remember now that G wanted some. He can come and live vicariously through The SM who is NOT a girl and never has been but does share the name Scout thus the reference. :D

No, no Germans. The SM picked out a very friendly mild breed of livestock :) (that's for Donna's little husband) since we know Levi will want to be a little keeper of the bees too since he is already obsessed with bees.

You can have some of my honey but don't steal it and don't especially dress up like a bear and steal my honey because someone did that to Donna's and look what happened!!

  5. oh Rachel, what glorious pictures! And hooray for the bees, doing their thing and working hard. How exciting to be having your very own pet bees too - I bet homegrown honey is super-delicious!

    1. I wonder if home grown honey will taste that much better because like home grown veggies we nurture and watch them grow and we eat them at the picking. I'm hoping that is the case with the honey.

Did you know that honey can come in different colors besides 'honey' color? I just found out that if bees get pollen from flowers that are say, purple, then they can make purple honey! I think that is pretty cool.......

My Mom used to make applesauce that was pink. People thought she'd put dye in her applesauce. She thought that was as ridiculous as those who thought she'd sit and curl all of us girls naturally curly hair everyday! :) It was from the Red something or other apples. It made the applesauce pink! :)

    2. Okay, so last year's honey was the darkest its ever been. I think it was because of the fields of golden rod that were prolific that year. But purple??? I had no idea. But now you've *given* me ideas. I wonder how much I can influence the colour of the honey by planting certain wildflowers?

    3. I don't know but it would be fun to try..... you'll have to let me know! I wonder if there is information on it on the Internet. Dumb question. EVERYTHING is on the Internet!! :D

  6. I LOVE those photos! Aren't bees amazing. We got given a hive but I passed it onto another friend as I was sure my youngest who was 4 at the time would find the hive to inviting and I was afraid of the consequences, he likes to catch bees in his bare hands! Don't you just love it when you suddenly hear that buzzing and realise that the tree next to you if full of bees!

    1. I do love it Jenni especially all the more because we've not heard that sound in so long! I was told the reason but I can't remember why there has been a shortage of honey bees all across the country.

We do not however, have a shortage of those stupid paper wasps. My house, wood, garden gnomes, etc. are covered in their nests. Levi catches them all of the time and I don't know how he doesn't get stung! They are so aggressive and mean!! I was attacked by a whole nest of them once and it hurt so bad I was bawling! I'm a grit your teeth and curl up in a ball kinda gal when it comes to pain. This had me out right tears running down my face bawling.

We're hoping the honey bees will be territorial and chase away a lot of the paper wasps.

  7. I wish I'd have had my zoom lens on my camera to get even closer but I had fun getting as close as I could and it was actually harder than I thought. Those little buggers don't stay still for a second and trying to keep them in my camera lens was an interesting experience. I have several photos without any bees in them. :D
