Toilet Paper Your Garden? Anyone?

I love reading about gardening.  Especially articles and information about gardening in an urban setting.  I live on a tiny chunk of land so I am always looking for ways to make the most out of my space.  I came across a website a few years ago that I just loved.  In fact, it was this website that gave me the idea to put a chicken coop on top of my garden beds which is working wonderfully by the way.

Anyway, when I saw these videos and they involved gardening with toilet paper...... well....... you know me!  Come on!  Sign me up!  Bathroom humor in my garden!!!   I had to try it......

Pretty cool huh?  Sooo, we've been saving toilet paper rolls in grocery bags in all of our bathrooms for several months now and The Native's have been thinking I really am going koo-koo!

Here we are working on our seed tape made out of TOILET PAPER!!  Henny Penny is taking flour paste and making dabs every two inches.  Mr. M and Mr. J are coming behind with carrot seeds to put on the glue spots.

Mr. T is measuring out the toilet paper and then folding it in half for the younger ones.  The SM is getting the potting soil and seeds ready for our toilet paper roll pots.

Doesn't this look like a load of fun?  I know I'm having fun filling this post with all sorts of puns......

The SM getting the empty toilet paper rolls all ready to go.

The SM and Mr. T bantering back and forth on this dirty job.

The SM making sure Mr. T wipes and cleans up his mess.

Our seed tape is laid out and drying so that it doesn't stick together when we roll it up.

Rows and rows of carrot seed tape that we will use to toilet paper our garden.

Have you seen a lovelier use of toilet paper rolls?  I love that all we need to do is just put these suckers in the ground and they will bio-degrade and add nutrients to the soil.

I feel so Fanny Farmerish.

Wads of toilet paper never looked so wonderful.

:D  Do I really have to say anything about this photo???

  1. So, the toilet paper with the seeds goes inside the toilet paper rolls?
    Your puns? Real stinkers!

    1. :) No, the toilet paper with the seeds is like those seed tape thingies. You put them in your garden, cover them with soil and wa-LA! You've planted your seeds perfectly spaced apart. The toilet paper rolls are for starting seeds inside. We're starting flowers and veggies inside and in a few weeks we'll transplant them outside only since we're not using those plastic seed starter tray thingies we can put these directly into the ground. TP roll and all. :D

    2. Gotcha. I could have watched the video, I suppose....rather talk to you! Haven't decided on a garden this year or not. Already decided I don't want it where it was before and not sure where I do want it and don't really want to dig up the yard in a new place just yet....and I have a touch of the :Kristen". Maybe net year...

    3. LOL! You sound like me. I'm always changing things around. Yanking up plants and moving them here or there or not wanting them all together and planting something else........ Wanting a new garden in this spot....... It does help having minions. Especially if they are yellow and look like twinkies. ;D

  2. The family that toilet papers together . . . ummm. . . does - I don't know, toilet papering together. How can YOU have this much more energy than I do? I mean - okay, I'm, like thirty years older than you, but still. I have not the slightest inclination tonight of getting off this couch at all, much less making a garden AT ALL, much less saving toilet paper rolls (granted you can rack 'em up faster than we can) or pasting in seeds or - anything. I DON'T WANT TO DO ANYTHING. Maybe tomorrow. But probably not.

I have The Native's and The SM helping me........ by myself I wouldn't have the energy to do this either.

    2. That was what I was going to say, Kristen. She has minions! Your minions all grew up. Enjoy your couch. I'm sure she will share the fruits of her labor....

  3. It's a good thing you pointed out that you were making puns, cuz I wouldn't have even noticed. Clueless, again. Are you planning to eat those triple fudge brownies?

    1. Hahahaha! You noticed the brownies. I wondered who would notice. Of course I'm not going to eat them! I'm making a batch and bringing them to your house! ;) You've had a hard week..........

  4. You should explain why the Triple Chocolate brownies are there on the counter. That would make a good blog post.

  5. You do do (ha)a lot of neat things together! I've heard of the toilet paper, seed tape idea, but have yet to try it. Please do update us on how it works! But the toilet paper rolls for starting the seedlings is new to me. I like it. So many things an empty toilet paper roll can be!

We want to build a chicken tractor for out in the fields, to fertilize them. Chicken tractor is a weird thing to call them. Now I want to go and get a photo of one of the chickens on the big orange tractor.

    1. How did I miss this comment? I remember reading it and I 'thought' I replied... hmmmm. Because I remember commenting about the chicken on the orange tractor.

If you do put a chicken on the tractor will you name the chicken Rachel? :D

  6. I watched the videos. Too cool. However, I'm too busy laying around and so I don't do gardening. Maybe in my NEXT life! Wanna hear if it works! (Once again, I've sent another one of your fabulous posts to a friend.)

    1. I really like this gal's website. I've gotten a lot of great ideas from her that have started my own wheels turning and building on her ideas.

Like our gypsy wagon hen house.
