THIRTEEN!
Guess who is thirteen? Yup! Another teenager in this house of mine.
Henny Penny was so excited to hit the big 13. The Mum on the other hand was totally lame and didn't take photos of our excursion out together where Henny Penny got her toes painted. A pedicure. Her first. Cute toes!
And then she got a new bike. True to Henny Penny style, she didn't like/want any of the girly bikes I pulled out for her to try. She ended up with a boys bike. All black. I love that about her. One of her many qualities that I love. Very down to earth. My girl!

El Creepo!
This past weekend, The SM's youngest sister got married. It was a beautiful wedding, she was a beautiful bride.
With weddings that means family is in town. There were dinners and photo shoots and receptions. Plenty of time for me to mingle and once again declare myself as the creepy sister in law!
We were having a dinner with the groom's family so The SM's family could meet the groom's family. The dinner was outside in the backyard at a home of friend's of the groom's family. How complicated is that? Just know that I have yard and kitchen envy. Big time!! The kitchen in this house was so fantastic, I would actually cook something in it. Maybe. At least heat up frozen dinners in it for sure for The Natives.
Anyway, we're all standing around talking after the dinner was over and I look over at my brother in law who is The SM's younger brother who is actually my age which tells you that The SM totally robbed the cradle. Totally!! I remind him every so often.......... I look over and my brother in law is talking to who? I don't know. Doesn't matter. What matters is that one of the front pockets of his jeans is sticking out and GO ME!
I'm walking...... walking........ walking............. intent on putting that pocket back in the jeans where it belongs........... I get to my brother in law.......... I stick out my hand............. and GASP!! WHAT THE HECK AM I DOING??? Hellloooooooo! Can you get any creepier?? Snatch hand back just in time!!
I busted up laughing and my brother in law looked at me and asked me what was so funny. With a red face I told him what I'd almost done! Thankfully, he knows I'm awfully creepy and weird like that and said, "That would have been awkward"! Uh. YA!
Sigh........ once a mom of little boys who always have their pockets hanging out........... always a mom........
So, when's the next family reunion?

Band-aids
The school year has started. Most of The Natives have started school. With the start of new things the use of band-aids goes way up. Levi has a new teacher, new classroom, new classmates and the destruction to his arms and legs begins all over again.
Do you know what it is like to be a parent, a mommy who knows that the outer destruction, the digging and making oneself bleed is because inside the little one is upset?
First day of school. Levi gets off the bus and is out of sorts. Very belligerent. Upset. There's no reasoning with him when he gets like this. All systems are shut off and it takes time to help him get things sorted and right again. He's sitting downstairs in the hall hunched over rocking back and forth crying. I kneel down next to him and try to talk to him noticing that I need to get enzyme cleaner to clean the carpets as he is wiping blood on them as he digs at his legs and arms.
I can put band-aids all over the sores on my sons legs and arms and I do but man it kills me! It kills me that I can't take away and heal that which makes Levi get this way in the first place!
I don't really know what the purpose of this blog post is or what I hope to accomplish...... I sent Levi off to school this morning with a prayer in my heart and hope that he'll settle in. He went to school with a headache and a bit out of sorts. I gave him medicine to help his head and have kept my phone next to me looking at it often making sure I've not missed a phone call from the school. Off he went, teeth not brushed and hair not done. Today's battle was trying to get him to eat his breakfast.
Normally I try to pull up my boot straps and end with some positive insight but today, it is raining outside. It mirrors what is happening inside. My heart and eyes are raining for my baby. My baby that hurts and no band-aid can make it better in this life time. Thank heavens for our Savior Jesus Christ and that Levi will have the best band-aid for eternity making it all better. I hold onto this....... but sometimes...... I'd like a quick fix.............

Suck it up lady!
This morning I ran another half marathon. Going into it, I was nervous because my leg and knee haven't healed all the way from running my marathon earlier this year. I've continued training knowing this half was coming up but have cut way back babying my knee and leg.
Today dawned bright and early. Okay. Not bright. The sun wasn't up yet as a friend and I headed north to the city of Draper, Utah where we were going to run the half. I'd coerced my friend into running months ago because let's face it, no one wants to run alone right?
The race began and I was feeling great. I was running my best yet. I was so excited. Mile after mile I was feeling great and my time was my best. I couldn't wait to get to the finish to see what my end time was going to be!
Mile 7. Seven is a lucky number for some people. It wasn't lucky for me today. My knee went out. Big time. I was ticked. I was angry. Why?? Why the heck? At mile 10 while limping along I thought, "I'm sick and tired of having things taken away from me! I spent almost my entire 30's in bed or on the couch, now that I'm starting to gain some health, my passion for running is being taken from me. Why?"
Did I mention I was angry? Because if I didn't, I just want to point out that I was angry. Very angry. Then I hit mile 11 and I was ashamed of myself. What an ungrateful snot! As I continued limping along I said a prayer and asked for forgiveness. I'm not paralyzed from my neck down. I haven't lost any children or my spouse. How dare I feel sorry for myself!
The last mile went much better with my change of attitude. It was still dreadfully painful and seemed more like 6 miles instead of 1 mile but my nose was back in joint and does anyone even know what I'm talking about? The whole, nose out of joint thing............ Anyway, life looks a whole lot better when one focuses on positive things instead of the negative.
I'm sitting here typing this in my recliner. My leg is propped up on pillows with ice on my knee. I'll go see the doctor on Monday. I've done me a good one this time........ Next to me is a beautiful bouquet of white and red roses. The aroma wafts around me and I am again reminded how blessed I am. I have a husband, The SM who spoils me rotten and wanted me to know he is proud of me.

Paying it Forward
Several years ago, I was driving home after dropping Henny Penny off at her gymnastics. I was tired, not feeling well, and shouldn't have been driving. I came to an intersection where I needed to turn right. There was enough room to pass the cars lined up at the stoplight for me to pass and make the right turn. Or so I thought...... As I squeezed past several cars I started to pass a truck and our side mirrors hit. I slammed on my breaks and froze. I looked over at the driver and wanted to die. The truck was gorgeous! It was obvious the driver took a lot of pride in his truck. I looked at the driver and kept mouthing over and over to him, "I'm so sorry"! I didn't know what to do! I've never forgotten what happened next. He smiled at me and waved me on. What??? He wasn't going to get out of his truck and see if I'd damaged his mirror? He wasn't going to yell at me that I shouldn't have passed him since there wasn't enough room? He smiled at me and waved his hand several times reassuring me it was okay and to carry on.
I drove away humbled and in awe. That man had taught me a valuable lesson. I'm a hot head. Especially when I am driving. (Blushing). Had the tables been turned, I'd have been yelling my head off at the idiot driver!
I've thought about this lesson many times and have said a little prayer in my heart each time as I've thought of this man over the years asking Heavenly Father to bless him. Where ever he is, bless him.
Today I was able to pay it forward. I was at the 'Marts and walked up to my truck with my cart full of goodsjunk food. A white SUV was parked next to mine and a tired harried mama was trying to get her little ones into their vehicle. Two little boys ran over and yanked open the door slamming it against mine. The mother exasperated yelled at her little ones not to slam the door to which they ended up doing again. In a panic, the mother rounded the truck to see me standing there looking at a big white paint job now on the side of my truck. She apologized profusely. I smiled at her and told her no worries. It's just monetary. It's an object. No harm done. Another reassuring smile and I got in my truck and drove away.
To the man who taught me a valuable lesson, thank you. May I keep learning to pay it forward and where ever you are, God bless you!

Dumpster Diving

A typical fridge with children/grandchildren/nieces/nephews/neighborhood vagabonds is covered in darling artwork that to the adult eye may look like scribbles and hand prints but to the child who is the next Van Gogh it is a master piece.
Not my fridge. My fridge is covered in the mailed weekly grocery store ads that have been painstakingly gone over time and time again and each item that is wanted is circled and talked about and each newspaper is carried around in hand for a day or so until it is posted on the fridge along with the coupons that come in the mail for food items. You do NOT remove these items from the fridge. I don't care if you need the magnet to put something else up on the fridge, say, another darling Native's artwork or an important reminder like a wedding announcement. Go find another magnet or better yet, go find another fridge! What ever you do, do NOT break this rule.
Yesterday we went to the local city parade. We were sitting minding our own business watching the colorful floats go by with Miss Mary Cow Dairy and her promenade go by and other like floats. As we sat and watched, random people would walk by and hand out coupons to local businesses. Levi was in heaven! His little hands full of coupons! Who cares about the local high school bands marching by looking half wilted in the heat blowing their horns! Coupons!!
Levi came home and........... put them on the fridge. This morning I was busily cleaning the kitchen that looks like one of the floats from the parade blew up in my kitchen when I came across some papers I needed to put on the fridge for later use. Without thinking............. I BROKE THE RULE! I grabbed a magnet, tossed the coupon for some local restaurant in the garbage and GASP! Levi saw me.
I tried to brush it off as no big deal and told him other coupons would come in the mail and to go and play and yadda yadda yadda. He would't let it go. Is the coupon going to the dump? Do we need to go to another parade to get another coupon? How could I let the coupon go to the dump?
This went on for about five minutes. I continued to clean the kitchen and then I heard it. Noooooooo! Not the dreaded sniffle!!! NOOOOOOOooooooooo! I look over and the tears are flowing and Levi is standing there asking me how could I and in my mind I'm cursing the people handing out coupons at the parade as I tromp outside to once again............ dig through the garbage to find the coupon that I have thoughtlessly thrown away. I can't tell you how many times I have dug through my disgusting garbage for this child because what is trash to me is treasure to him that he can't live without.
I walk back into the house with a plastic smile on my face and hand Levi back his coupon. He takes it from me and with a genuine smile on his tear streaked face he walks over to the fridge, studies it for a few minutes trying to decide just where it should go because the place where it originally was apparently isn't good enough now. With the eye of a master artist he moves some other coupons around and finds the perfect place for the saved from the dumpster coupon and places it smack dab at eye level in the middle of the fridge. With a satisfied grin Levi turns and walks away. Once again order has been established in his world.
I also step back and take a look at the fridge. A fridge that to the untrained eye would look like coupons, newspaper ads, scribbles, and hand prints but to this mommy, it totally looks like a Renoir on my fridge. A masterpeace (pun intended).

40

40 to me sounds like I have to be responsible and grow up. Act mature or something! 40! I can remember my Mum being 40 and she was sooooooo ooooooold! (Sorry Mum).
A few months ago I read a book where a girl was supposed to marry this OLD guy. Her father wanted her to and she was so disgusted. He was so OLD. He was like, 40!!!! I wanted to throw the book across the room! What is wrong with 40???
Oh man did I not look forward to Saturday. Time happens though. When we want it to slow down it comes at us with rocket propulsion and snatches us as it flies past. Saturday morning came and I sat up in bed. Huh. I looked around. Huh. I was amazed. During the night my teeth hadn't fallen out, my hair wasn't dyed that old lady orange or purple, my body wasn't wracked with arthritis, and I didn't need to find my bifocals to see that I'd slept in on the alarm clock.
What do ya know! It IS true what they say. It's just a number and a state of mind! I'm just as immature as ever and oh the possibilities the future holds because I can blame denial and justification on senility beings as I'm so 'old'.
