Baby It's Cold Out There

Icicles.  I can remember growing up in the frigid winters in Montana and the huge icicles that would form.  We'd break them off as kids and suck on them or sword fight.

You know it is cold when in the middle of the afternoon, the tops of the trees are still covered in thick frost.  How little birdie feet do not freeze off is beyond me.......

We're growing icicles apparently.  I have been told that I am not to break off any of these icicles that are hanging off the front of my porch threatening to fall on someone's head when they come knocking at my house.  The Natives want to see how long we can 'grow them'.  So far, they are several feet long.  I think soon I shall feel like I live in a cave and start crawling around saying, "My Precious.......  Precious.......".

It's a warm and snug/cozy cave so if one has to hunker down for the time being with such freezing elements one can't/shouldn't complain.

Especially when one is reading, "Little House in the big Woods" by their wood stove with electrical lighting, "Indoor plumbing........ it's gonna be good......", treats in the fridge, and much more abundance than can be listed here.  TOILET PAPER!

  1. Every time it is cold outside I think of the pioneers (I live in pioneer territory) freezing to death after being driven out of their homes yet again . . . and I cuddle my warm baby and offer a prayer of gratitude.

    1. Me too Anaise. Me too. I think of them often when I have it so easy when it comes to the elements or when I run to the grocery store. It is hard for me to think of what all they went through..... for us.

  2. Amen Amen Amen to all of it. The snow slides slowly down the barn roof and the snowflakes at the lower, curled edge of the snow sheet also curl like claws. The other day, the horses were too frighted to go inside the barn -and I wondered if the snow from the room had come crashing down all at once and made them feel like someone was trying to close some curled-fanged mouth on them. How do little horsie feet not freeze?

And maybe in Montana the icicles are a whole lot cleaner than here -

    1. The snow and icicles are cleaner in MT. They aren't carrying all of this gunk we get here in the air! I wonder how a girl who loves the mountains so much, ended up in a place that 9 months out of the year she can't see them because of all of the gunk in the air!

Poor horses. Kind of funny though.........

  3. My Precious...oh, doubled over in laughter! I love those bright, COLD shots you caught. And it was delightful to warm up so brilliantly in that awesome, cozy corner, with Laura Ingalls-Wilder no less! Yeah, reading her books makes a person very aware of today's comforts.

    1. HA! I knew you'd catch that!!!

You should have seen the look on my kids' faces when I read the part where Pa gave the girls the stomach to blow up as a balloon and play with. :)

  4. Wow, I have never seen icicles that big - we're lucky if they reach 2 or 3 inches here. If I were there I'd be wanting to let them grow too! Snuggling up by your wonderful stove with a good book sounds like pure bliss!

    1. One of our neighbors took a photo of her husband breaking off an icicle on the back of their barn that was easily over 9 feet long! It's just crazy this year. It does make one want to hunker down and just keep warm and quiet.

  5. We haven't had daggers like this in years! It's not been cold enough. We are having a very unusually cold winter here. Sometimes I like it...... and then..... when I have to go out in it. Not so much. :D

Hahaha! No hair to burn off anymore. :D

    You spoil me too much...........

  6. I'm enjoying the experience of watching my icicles grow, just like your boys. They are so beautiful in the late afternoon light. Your photos are so yummy.

    1. Yesterday I passed a house where the icicles went from the roof clear to the ground! Impressive!
