Bees

I am soooo far behind in my blogging.  Much has been going on in the Rubow household and I can't seem to keep up.  This is old news but news never the less which is something fun that is taking place in our back yard.

The arrival of the bees.  Back in the spring, the bees arrived.  They came in this wooden box that my boys are looking at.  The big white marshmallow with the hat is The SM, soon to be, The Keeper of the Bees.

The process is quite fascinating.  The bees come in this wooden box.  The queen bee comes in her own little box which is in The SM's hands.   I should have taken a picture of her in her own little apartment.  The queen bee is stuck in this little apartment, her way blocked so she can't come out.  The SM is removing the part that is blocking her and replacing it with a marshmallow.  She'll still be blocked in her apartment but with a marshmallow instead of ummm, a cork?  I didn't pay close attention to what was blocking her before.

The queen's apartment is then placed in with the bees and then the bees are left alone for a week.  If the bees accept the queen, they'll eat the marshmallow thus freeing her.  If they don't...... well....... thankfully our bees accepted their queen and let her out of her apartment.  They've been busy filling the hive with babies every since.

I'm getting ahead of myself.......

The local help is so.............  helpful.................

Who raised this punk??

Time to put the bees in the hive!

P.S.  Time to get a new videographer.  The person who took this video would not shut up the whole entire time!  Grief!  Some people!!

    1. I didn't think I would/did either but it has been quite fascinating fun! Plus it is a project that I don't have to be responsible for. I'm good with those.

  4. Yay! Bees! And you have a lovely accent! I'm sure you'd tell me that I'm the one that has an accent. How delightful to hear your sweet voice.

Our bees came in a cardboard box. In the frames with the queen already. And they survived the winter this year, thank heavens. You're gonna love the honey and beeswax.

    1. Too funny! I don't consider myself having an accent. Nor having a sweet voice. Never did like the sound of my own voice.....

I am super excited for the wax. The honey is cool, but the wax!! I'm looking forward to what I'll be able to do with it. I'll be coming back to your blog for your tutorials. :D

    1. If it is a wasp, KILL IT! :D If it is one of our bees ( a honey bee) then sing to it and talk to it and kindly show it the door. :D

    2. It wasn't a wasp or it would be dead. I didn't know you were keeping bees, so I'm glad I didn't kill it. At least I don't think I did. I tried to shoo it up to the sky light that it probably came in through, with a pillow. I don't think it went up, but I didn't hear/see it any more. Don't worry. I'm sure it survived.
