The Project

The question we've been asked the most this spring/summer.  What are you doing with all of those paving stones on the sidewalk by your house?

You can see from the photos that this project started months ago in the spring.  There aren't any leaves on the trees yet.

This is when it comes in nice and handy having so many big boys around the house.  Well, that is if and when you can get them to all be home at the same time.

Watching the paving stones being unloaded was quite exciting can't you tell?  That and I love teasing The Native's that I am taking photos of their cute bums.  The SM's included......

Sorry.  What were we talking about?

More proof this was months ago.  If I were a good blogger I would have up to date play by play photos of the project but we all know that isn't the case and much like my personality, my blog is spastic.

Last year The SM and my Dad helped me build these square foot garden boxes where they have spent a year sitting empty at the south end of our yard.  We built them such that our gypsy wagon hen house could sit on top of them, thus taking care of fertilizing my gardens for me!

Remember....... I'm lazy........ if I can skip a step or make it more efficient I am all over it!

I really do need to waddle myself out to the gardens and take a photo of them now.  The arbor there in the background is covered in bright red roses, more of the gardens have paving stones around them and are filled with veggies, the blackberries to the right are covered in blossoms which The SM's bees are loving.

This is what The SM and some of The Native's have been hard at work at.  Making my veggie patch look more beautifulishness!  I just made that word up......  You didn't know that wasn't a real word did you?  It's okay.  That's why I'm here.  To point out what is real and what isn't.

Real:  There are several more veggie beds paved in now.  The one here on the right is full of potatoes and onions, the one next to it, has cucumbers, and The Girl's Gypsy Wagon is further down the yard on the last veggie garden getting fabulously fertilized and not much else because my poor Girl's are going under a really bad hair/feather treatment/process right now called molting.  It's hideous really. They look like a cat got a hold of them, some worse than others.   I know!  I should take photos and blog about it!!!

  1. Wow - do you hire your workmen out? They've done a fab job and my garden needs sprucing! Mind you, it maybe a little far to travel. I do love your moving chicken coop that really was an inspired idea!

    1. They have done a good job. I'm pleased with their work and progress. When it is finished it will look quite nice. It is slow going as The SM as so few hours to work on it and needs to move the sprinklers that are under ground making it an even bigger project.

I'm sure my workmen wouldn't mind one bit hopping on a plane, crossing an ocean to come and see you. The only stipulation I have: THEY HAVE TO BRING ME!! :D

  2. I just laughed my head off uproariously! I have no idea what Doomsday Preppers is but I get the idea!

I get teased all of the time from my neighbors and my little 'farm'. :D

I'll be sure to have Ron get a fan out and throw some poo at it so you'll hurry and get your little tooshie here to Provo!!!

  3. I love having nowhere for the weeds to grow! I need pictures of the gardens now. I think that this is the kind of gardening I want to do next summer ...
I can't housebuild and garden, too, but hopefully next summer I won't be housebuilding.
No chickens, but a garden, yes!

    1. I like things clean. This will hopefully keep edges cleaner. Some weeds still get in there between the stones but I just get my weed spray out and blast them to death. :) Quite a satisfying feeling actually!

Your house building has been fun to watch! Plenty of time for a garden.

    2. And really? I would like my raised beds to be about waist high....wonder if that is doable???

    3. They do!!! They do have higher beds made especially so a person isn't bending over and also for those in wheel chairs!!

  4. It looks great with the pavers! We put gravel around ours, with weed fabric underneath. Looked good for the first few years, but now...YUCK! Wish we had used your method.

    1. My parents put in that fabric stuff and have hated it so we had fair warning. Grateful for that. Hard when you put so much work and effort into a project only to have it not look it a year or two later.

  5. Actually my yard looks like it is suffering this year from the lack of moisture! My grass all over looks half dead!

  6. Such an exciting project! And boy-oh-boy, do I ever know what you mean about the challenge of being an up-to-date blogger. Oy, I'll never get caught up.

Your hens' Gypsy Wagon is so darn pretty. Ever so much lovelier than our chicken tractor (which sounds cooler than it looks), which is very utilitarian. And very unfinished. I can't wait for it to be functional and out in the fields so the chooks can do there fertilizing thing.

    1. Thanks Wabi. With the chickens being so prominent in our yard, I knew what ever we did, it would have to look some what presentable. The SM did a good job building it for me. I'm quite pleased with how it is working out. I didn't know if my experiment would work having it on my garden beds but it is proving to be working really well!

  7. well yeah. Guess I've really been out of it. I haven't even been in that back yard for months, so I haven't seen any of this. Which is stupid - I LOVE a good garden and paving stones. As long as someone else is doing the garden. Just love it. So after i get home from Santa Fe, assuming I do, I'll come over and sneak blackberries off the canes. Pretend it's my garden for a sec. Maybe the chickens will run me off. I'll take my chances.

    1. It's almost finished now and it really does look nice. I'm quite pleased with how it has turned out. Just a little bit left to do.

You can come and take fruit/veggies from my back yard any ol' time you want!
