Improvising

Me: You're all wet! What have you been doing?

Miss K: We've been jumping on the trampoline. We put the sprinkler under it.

Me: We don't have a trampoline!

Miss K: Yes we do! Levi's!

(Improvising: It is what The Native's do when their mean parents won't buy them a trampoline like all of the cool parents.)

  1. Caveat: this mean parent never allowed tramps and for good reason. The Bishop's wife's cousin has been paralyzed for decades because of a kid trampoline accident. I, myself, saw my first son nearly break his neck. So mean parents end up with grandchildren. HOWEVER - same almost broken necked son just bought his 2YEAR OLD SON one of the dang things.

Tempting phrase: What's the dang use?

  2. I remember pulling out my dad's tarps to make a slip n slide because my parents wouldn't buy one from the store.

I'm less nervous with my trampoline with the enclosure on it. It still causes concerns though.

  3. Thank Heavens the people who lived here put one in so I could be considered the "Cool Parent". ;) And since it is in the ground I feel a little better about the kids safety. Although I know I am just deluding myself.
I especially get iffy when it comes to sprinklers and tramps since I watched a friend spend a summer with casts on both legs & up around his hips because of a little slip on a wet tramp.

  4. Kristen, Coming from someone who rides horses....... ;)

Chastina, I think the side protection things are a fabulous idea. I can't tell you how many times we flew off of ours growing up!

The tarps for a slippy slide bring back fun memories for me too.

Natalie, We're just cheap. Heck! We throw The Native's on horses. I think a tramp is less dangerous. Insurance wise with a non-fenced in backyard.....ouch!!

  5. Also note that if your child gets hurt on a trampoline, health insurance won't cover it. Only home insurance does.

For example, if your child breaks his arm on your neighbor's trampoline and you go to the emergency room, the check-in nurse will ask what happened and where. Once you inform them that it is a trampoline accident, they will immediatly let you know that your health insurance company will not pay a dime (at least IHC won't). They will suggest that you file a claim with your neighbor's home insurance. So you eat the entire bill. I'm not sure what happens when you find out that your neighbor did not tell their home insurance about the trampoline.

  6. Brian, Speaking from experience......an expensive lesson that one was!

  7. Brian & Rachel, Such good info. I had no idea and we have IHC's Select Med.
I am grateful that we finally got a fence up, although, it doesn't help much. But I do believe our insurance knows about the trampoline, so your kids should be safe on that account to jump here.

  8. i didn't realize trampoline accidents were so tricky with insurance. i was glad to walk away from the one in provo. it is dead now. i am very glad for that. especially now. i never felt that having a net around the side would help me feel better...i was always worried they would land on their necks weird...just on the tramp itself..not the ground. sigh. too many ways to get hurt, isn't there?

  9. But the point is, they had fun...no one got hurt....and I still have trees in my yard that I'm not sure my kids should be climbing.

  10. Ah, the trampoline debate!
The nets on the side make me feel much better, but I still get nervous when there's more than one kid on there at a time, especially if one of them is BIG.

Improvisation is the key to having a happy life. We never ever have every single thing that we'd like. We have to learn to do with what we've got. I love it!!

  11. Misty, There is/are too many ways and even with the most protection they can still get hurt.

Get this!! I grew up riding in a car without a seat belt and I rode my bike without a helmet!! Explains a lot doesn't it? ;)

Lyndee, I watched my sister fall out of tree head first. It was like in the cartoons. She bounced from limb to limb all the way down and after she got her breath back that had been knocked out of her we howled with laughter as we climbed back up!

Ginna, Yes, the great debate. And after all we do as parents to try to keep our kids safe......they go and cut off their toes because we've bound their feet too tight! :) Part of being a kid is the bumps and bruises along the way.....especially if you spend 95% of your childhood barefoot like I did and still do! :)

  12. Natalie, You can have all the insurance in the world and it doesn't help us. When our kid hurts themselves on our tramp....our insurance says, too bad. Aint coverin' ya! So, we do like we've always done. Turn a blind eye and hope that our kids don't knock themselves out on someone elses tramp. It's the risk we take in letting our kids play with the cool kids. :D

  13. I want a trampoline. I mean, I wouldn't even mind a little tiny one like that... but I do wish it would be a LITTLE bigger, and, well, a LOT bigger, so I can actually jump.... oh whatever. I do not know how they enjoy themselves on that puny thing.

  14. Hanna, You mean to tell me that if you and your girlfriends came over and spazzed out on our mini tramp you wouldn't have fun? :D

Jody, Can't get rid of the little tramp. It's for Levi for therapy. They can't get into too much trouble on this little one thankfully.
