Conversations between a 9 and 11 year old.

My baby girl: I can't wait until February

Her brother: Why?

Baby girl: Duh! Look at the calendar. Hearrrrrts. Valentines Day!

Her brother: Dude. Have you ever gotten a Valentine love card?

Baby girl: So and So (names with held) are SO annoying. They're in love with me and best best friend (another name with held). I have to sit by So.

Her brother: You're totally gonna get Valentine love cards. I get them every year.

Baby girl: That is SO annoying. I do NOT want one from So.

Her brother: I'm just tellin' ya. You're gonna get em.

Baby girl: I don't like So. He comes up to me and best best friend on the playground and I run away.

Her brother: I'll watch for So and if I see him bothering you I'll come and tell him to leave you alone.

Baby girl: No,..... that's okay.........

  1. This is too cute for words--except your words, of course. My 7 year old (Lawson) is already engaged in these little "lovey" games with these little girls in his class. It's all "Y. chased me behind a tree today. I think Y.'s really pretty." And then, a couple of hours later, like we've all forgotten, or arent' really paying attn. or something, "I love Y. NOT like boyfriend or girlfriend or anything. I just love her. Is that okay?" (really anxiously).

    (sigh.) They start so young.

But the push-pull of annoyance and anticipation here is great. Funny post, Rach. You wrangled a smile. :)

  2. I love it! I especially love how she keeps bringing up So when her brother changes the subject. My girls fall in love with boys like Josh Groban and David Archuleta so I'm not too worried about them getting love valentines from the ones they have their eyes on...

  3. What big brother really means to say is: baby girl, you ain't never gonna have a date.

  4. We have the "is he bugging me because he doesn't like me or because he likes me?" conversations all the time. It'll be interesting to see what Valentines Day brings.

  5. Lori, The wrangling that goes on around here!! :) The conversation was so funny. I was sitting her pretending I wasn't listening......like we mom's do just cracking up and yeah. Why so young????

Gerb, I'd much rather that! If you had asked me yesterday I'd have told you that my daughter thought boys had cooties. I mean come on! She lives with six. She knows her cooties! Today....I'm thinking her brothers need to step up the cootiness.

Sarah, Don't we know it! That boy has been 'mothering' her since the day she was born. She's not getting away with anything while he's around!! Thank heavens!!

Chastina, Valentines Day which means girls will interpret and look far more into the meaning of their Valentines than the boys. The boys...if there is candy in the Valentine then that is pretty cool.....the candy part.....they've long since thrown away the Valentine part.

  7. Thanks for this post. It reminds me that I need to purchase a handgun, shotgun, lots of ammo, and complete the concealed weapon permit application. And I think I will start growing my facial hair really scary long and ragged, and get some colored contacts that make my eyes look creepy. She doesn't need to date for at least 12 more years.

Really though that is too cute on both parts.

  10. Jody, We've not heard the joke!

Natalie, Trouble times two is right! Then again, the way these two boss each other all the time I figure they'll keep each other in line or tattle in the process.

Gin, Well yeah! Cuz it isn't Fraz!! :D

  11. I love this so much. And you wrote it BEE-utifully. I want Valentines. I always wanted them They'd never have annoyed me. I even had a crush on Tommy who liked to pretend to be a cat (which charmed my widdle socks off) in Kindergarten. If only they'd followed me around like that years later . . .
